Age 95, of Newark, DE, passed away on November 8, 2008, at the Christiana Hospital surrounded by her family.
Born in Ridgley, MD, Vivian was the oldest child of Harry and Gertrude Holsinger. She attended Goldey College and retired in 1987 after 31 years as a bookkeeper for Angerstein's in Elsmere, DE. Vivian was a member of the Elsmere Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. After her retirement, Vivian served as a bookkeeper for the church and the day care program. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and had been active in 4H. Vivian had been a resident of Garden of Whitechapel for the past 10 years where she had many friends and served as president of the resident council. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, sewing and gardening. Vivian was famous for her "sticky buns" that she made at Christmas time for family and friends. She also enjoyed attending her annual family reunions in June.
She was preceded in death by her children, Mary (Betty) Williams, Harry Altemus, Jr., Janet Thomas and Gerald Altemus. Vivian is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Megonigal and her husband Raymond and Richard Altemus and his wife Ann; her brother, Rodney Holsinger; her sister, Miriam H. Butler; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held on Wednesday, November 12, at 2 pm, at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL Kirkwood Highway and Duncan Road where friends may call on Tuesday from 6-8 pm. and on Wednesday after 1:30 pm. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Elsmere Presbyterian Church, New Road & Ohio Ave., Elsmere , DE 19805; or Heartland Hospice, 261 Chapman Road, Newark, DE 19702.
