| Birth: | Aug. 6, 1941 | | Death: | Nov. 2, 2008 Alexandria, Egypt |  Sudan President. He served as the third President of Sudan from May 6, 1986 to June 30, 1989. Born the son of a prominent African family in Khartoum, Sudan, he was reportedly a direct lineage ancestor of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. He was the third and the last democratically elected President of Sudan following the nation's independence from Great Britain in 1956. He was removed from power following a military coup led by current Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir. After his political overthrow, he lived in exile in neighboring Egypt, as a member of the National Democratic Alliance opposition party. A graduate of the University of London, he also served as Sudan's Ambassador to Egypt. Following his death in Egypt, his remains were returned to Sudan and interred in the Sayed Ali Al-Mirghani family grand mosque in Khartoum. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
