Wealthy Woman's Death

Mrs. Donetilia Cohn died at her home in Los Angeles on the 12th of the present month, leaving an estate of $167,000. Mrs. Cohn was a sister of the late Mrs. George Thurow and had been married three times. Her first husband was Tom Hughes, many years her senior, and who twenty-five years ago kept a saloon in Yuma at the southeast corner of First and Main streets. Hughes will be remembered by the old-timers as quite an eccentric character. Sometime in the '80s he made a lucky strike, selling a mine in the Silver district for $135,000. Refusing to accept a certified check in payment, he compelled the purchasers to have the money shipped here and the large amount was paid over to him in twenty dollar gold pieces. Soon after this lucky transaction he was married to Miss Tillie Santoya, the lady mentioned above as Mrs. Cohn, and within a few months they moved to Los Angeles. In that city Mr. Hughes invest (sic) one-half of his newly acquired wealth in Main street property. About three years later he suddenly left this country and has never been seen or heard of by his wife or friends since. Before going, however, he deeded to his wife all of his Los Angeles property and drew the fifty or sixty thousand dollars he had in the bank which he took with him. In due course of time Mrs. Hughes secured a divorce and later married J. McCreary, a Southern Pacific railroad clerk, by whom she had two children. To these two children she left all of her estate except one lot, which she willed to her last husband, Mr. Cohn.
