Philip J. Gardner was born March 28, 1926, in Lisbon, son of Philip E. and Mamie Brennen Gardner. He graduated from Lisbon Central School in 1944 and served in the Navy during World War II.

He married Beatrice Smith on July 10, 1946, at St. Philip and James Church, Lisbon, with the Rev. Francis DeRosiers officiating. The couple resided in Lisbon and Ogdensburg before moving to Morristown in 1954.

He was a former member of Morristown Fire Department, and was a founding member of the Morristown Moped Club.

Mr. Gardner worked for 30 years as a laboratory technician at Diamond National, Ogdensburg, and for more than eight years at St. Lawrence University, Canton, in the custodial department, retiring in 1988.
