Arthur LeMieux was my maternal grandfather. He was born to Arthur R. and Veronica (Tureck) LeMieux in Muskegon. He married Marjorie Oatman in August 1950 and worked the majority of his life as a carpenter. He built many homes including at least 3 of his own. He was the most moral, dedicated man...and walked straight as a line (though, once in a while had an Old Milwaukee at dinner;) ).
I used to spend my entire summer breaks as a kid at my grandparents on an 80 acre farm: spending most of my time following my grandfather around as he worked around the farm. Although I was incredibly spoiled (I was the only grandchild), I also knew the "rules" and I was completely expected to help around the house (dishes, etc). On Sunday afternoons, my grandma, grandpa, and I would "take a drive" to various places that were in driving distance (short drives). We would go get ice cream, go to whatever stores, etc. Nothing was the limit for me in my grandfather's eyes, though, as I said, I was completely expected to mind, not talk back, etc.
My last Christmas with him, I remember completely remember talking with him about birthdays, for whatever reasons. I remember saying to him, jokingly, "Do you know my birthday?" He chuckled and didn't hesitate to say, "July 13th".
Two days later, we got the call that he had died. He was sitting at their kitchen table one evening and, apparently, just fell out of the chair (there is a heart history on his side of the family).
14 years later, my daughter was born on his birthday. I have no idea how things work the way they do, but I am incredibly grateful to have had her on that special day <3
