HARM G. HARMS, 76, a native of Minonk and a resident of Rutland for more than 50 years, died shortly before noon today (Thursday, May 10) at St. Mary's hospital in Streator. He had submitted to major surgery in the hospital only 10 days previously, on May 1, and suffered a severe heart attack on the following day, last Wednesday, May 2.
Funeral services have been set tentatively for 2 o'clock next Sunday afternoon, May 13, at the Thierry Funeral Home in Wenona. Visitation may begin late Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Wayne Root, pastor of the Rutland Methodist church, will officiate at the funeral rites.
Mr. Harms was born in Minonk (HE WAS ACTUALLY BORN IN LASALLE COUNTY, ON A FARM THAT WAS JUST TO THE NORTH OF THE WOODFORD COUNTY LINE.), July 24, 1885, a son of George and Etta Harms. He was united in Marriage with Edna A. Proctor at Rutland, on April 8, 1908 (THE MARRIAGE ACTUALLY OCCURED IN 1909.), and they resided on a farm, north of Rutland. She died in November of 1941, and Mr. Harms retired from farming and moved to Rutland in 1946 (HE ACTUALLY MOVED IN 1945.).
Surviving are five sons and four daughters; Willard Harms, Streator; Warren Harms, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Elmer Harms, Rfd, Streator; Ralph and Walter Harms of Rutland; Leora Hattner, Aurora; Louise Knack, Dana; Myra Mae Lane, Springfield; Wilma Jean Baumann, Washington, Ill.; and Wahneta Hacker, Aurora. There are also 33 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Lewis Vinecore, Rutland and Mrs. Elsie Ireland, Vandalia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, Albert in 1936 and Herbert, killed in World War II in 1944, and by one brother.
Mr. Harms served on the Rutland school board for 25 years, and also served as a justice of the peace. He was a member of the Rutland Methodist Church.
