Born in Fredericksburg, Ohio on May 12, 1924. His father was William Latto Latou Ph.G, b 1883 Dundee,Scotland -d 1965. His mother was Laura Benson Latou Lee, of Fredericksburg and Akron, Ohio, d. 1985. His siblings are Jennie Lou Lee Hensley, Richard T. Lee, John "Jack" Latou,(dec),Andrew Latou (dec), Stewart Latou (dec), and Edythe Latou Sonntag(dec).
He was greatly influenced by his maternal grandmother, Jenny Cramer Benson Winters (Jan 19, 1884-1967), and his step-grandfather, Wilson Winters. Both are buried in the Fredericksburg East Cemetery.
Daddy moved to Goodyear Heights in Akron and was a member of Boy Scout troop #41 along with his good friend, Ray Hollin.
He graduated from Akron East High School in 1942. He served in the 666th Field Artillery (Charlie Battery) and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. The story of his unit is in the book Charlie of 666 written by Nate Blumberg.
After the war he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Akron, where he was also on the wrestling team. He worked as a rubber & plastics chemist at Bearfoot Sole, Boston Woven Hose, Faultless, Ebonite, Eaton Yale & Town, O'Sullivan, and Joy Manufacturing/Cooper Industries/ Crouse-Hinds.
He had planned a life of bachelorhood, but in 1955 Mom spotted him at a squaredance and changed his plans. In the process, she learned how to squaredance.
He married our Mom, Hazel Mae Wayne, on December 31, 1956 in the "Chapel in the Garden" at Angola, Ind. I was born January 31, 1958, Bernice Lynne Latou,in Akron, Ohio. My sister, Paula-Kay Latou (Mercer) was born February, 15, 1961, in Boston, Mass. We now both live in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mom and Daddy lived in the Eubanks House (see Sgt. Ray E. Eubanks-medal of honor) LaGrange, North Carolina (known as the Garden Spot) from 1978 until their deaths. They loved the town and stayed on after Daddy retired from Crouse-Hinds.
Mom died at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, N.C. on August 1, 2006. Daddy's health was pretty good until we lost her. They were married over 49 years.
In April 2008, Daddy and I traveled to Naples, Florida for treatment of his Parkinson's Disease. We had a great month together, we stayed at the Lighthouse Inn at Vanderbilt Beach, and went riding up and down Highway 41. We fed crumbcakes to the sparrows outside of the Starbucks at Golden Gate when we had our late morning coffee. We even went on a Pirate Cruise. He seemed to be recovering. Then bad things happened. He got sick from an infection in June, and then fought for 2 months to regain his health. We met many kind people who helped us and helped me stay right with him. He died at Naples Community Hospital on August 30, 2008 from overwhelming infections, my sister and I were by his side. We miss him. Wail!
In addition to being a husband, father, and chemist, he was a talented artist and had a wonderful dulcet-toned voice. He was exceptionally patient and kind. He remained handsome and good-natured all of his life, even through the loss of Mom and the indignities of illness.
