According to his tombstone, William Ward died 6 June 1852 at age 62, so he was born about 1789 in Maryland. He was the son of Lloyd (Loyd) Ward, Sr. and Elizabeth Bell.

William, born 1789, was the last of Lloyd and Elizabeth's children to be born in Maryland. Their next child, Lloyd, Jr. was born in Virginia in 1790. The family lived for many years in Hampshire County, Virginia, now part of Hampshire and Mineral Counties in West Virginia.

Although few records exist for the time, it is believed William first married Elizabeth Harvey. They became the parents of two sons, Samuel and John.

According to a researcher of this family, William married Deborah Browning after Elizabeth's death. They became the parents of seven children: Elias J., Ruth Ann, Hester Ann, Susan, Henry, Joseph and Benjamin. Deborah and William divorced in Ohio in 1843.

William apparently moved immediately to Jefferson County, Illinois near his Ward relatives. Jefferson County, Illinois records show that William Ward married Margaret Patton Ingram, widow of Nimrod Ingram on 8 Dec 1843. William died in 1852 and Margaret in 1858. She is buried here in Pleasant Grove as Margaret, wife of Nimrod Ingram.

On 3 August 1850, the census taker found only one adult named William Ward in Jefferson County, and he was aged 61, and thus born about 1789. The family consisted of:
Ward, William, M-61, Farmer, born Maryland
Ward, Margaret, F-50, born Virginia
Ward, Henry C., M-21, Farmer, born Ohio
Ward, Joseph V., M-18, Farmer, born Ohio
Ward, Benjamin H., M-16, Farmer, born Ohio
Ingraham, Henrietta, F-8, born Illinois

Henry, Joseph and Benjamin were William's sons from his marriage to Deborah Browning. Henrietta was probably Margaret's grand-daughter.

According to cemetery records and local newspaper accounts, Loyd (also spelled Lloyd) Ward, William's father, is also buried at Pleasant Grove. There is no stone, and the specific location of the grave is unknown. Because of the age of the stones in the section where William is buried, we believe it is probably near William's grave.

It should be noted that the Lloyd Ward who is buried in Ward Cemetery in Jefferson County is William's brother, not his father.
