H. Howard Barker, president of the Marlborough Market, Inc., and for nearly 45 years engaged in the market business in this city, died at his home on Rhode Island Avenue at 5:30 Sunday morning.
Henry Howard Barker was born November 11, 1863 in Middletown, a son of Edwin and Rebecca Anthony (Sherman) Barker. He received his education in the district schools of Middletown. After leaving school, he went to Providence to study pharmacy and was employed as a clerk in a drug store in that city for six years, conducted drug stores in Pawtucket and Riverside and was employed in a drug store in Olneyville for several years. In 1899 he came to Newport, and purchasing an interest in the market business conducted by his brother formed a partnership under the name of J.A. & H. H. Barker, continuing in that relation 12 years, occupying a store at the corner of Thames and Fair Streets. Later he started business for himself at the corner on Thames and Marlborough Streets in the Marlborough Market, which he continued until his death, the concern being incorporated in 1978 as the Marlborough Market, Inc. with Mr. Barker as its president.
Mr. Barker was at one time a member of Excelsior Lodge of Odd Fellows and a member of the Official Board of the Thames Street Methodist Episcopal Church. He had been a member of the Miantonomi Club for several years. He was a genial disposition and devoted to his family in preference to public life, his home being always open to friends.
November 3, 1891, he married Miss Ida Mabel Alger, daughter of the late Edwin G. S. and Jane E. (Mitchell) Alger, and she survives with two children, Edward H. Barker who has been for several years in business with his father and Mrs. Florence, wife of Richmond Seabury of Wellesley Hills, Mass, and three grandchildren, a brother J. Alton Barker, a well-known Newport citizen, another brother Wendell E. Barker, died a year ago. His sisters were the late Mrs. Charles H. Seattle, Mrs. John C. Bailey and Mrs. S. Jones.
Rev Nelson W. Bryant rector of St. George’s church officiated at the simple service Wednesday for H. Howard Barker, at his home on 31 Rhode Island Avenue. Relatives and many friends and associates attended and sent beautiful floral pieces. The interment was in the Middletown Four Corners cemetery.
