One Hundred and Fifty Years Ago (1842)
During a thunder storm on Wednesday the 10th inst. Mr. Charles Eldred of New Lisbon and Mr. Nathan Eldred and his son took shelter in the stable of a Barn belonging to Nathan Eldred, which was soon struck by a bolt of lightening, and a portion of the fluid tore Charles Eldred's hat open from crown to rim, and shocked him so severely that blood issued from one of his ears. His face was also scathed considerably from the fluid or flying splinters of the siding, and he was severely stunned, but soon recovered. The young man had his legs burnt some. The Barn, to all appearance, was struck in various places, as it appeared to be on fire all over at the first view, and burnt down in a very few minutes. About ten tons of hay were consumed in the Barn, which was insured. (Aug. 22, 1842; P. 2, Col. 6)
