Walter Albert Cooke was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Hogansburg, son of Abram and Dorothy Arquitt Cooke. He attended Hogansburg schools and worked on farms in Malone, Helena and Lisbon.
He married Mary H. Barnes on Nov. 28, 1934, at the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. The couple lived in Hogansburg before moving to Ogdensburg in 1942. They moved to their Pearl Street home in 1952. Mrs. Cooke died Dec. 14, 1993.
During World War II, Mr. Cooke worked at the former Cleveland Container Corp. He then was a machine operator at the Diamond International Paper Mill from 1948 until his retirement in 1972.
Mr. Cooke enjoyed playing cards and checkers and caning chairs. He was a member of the Notre Dame parish.
