Bennett Loy Barnhurst
Bennett Loy Barnhurst, a longtime resident of the St. Helens and Goble areas, died Aug. 13, 2008, in Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro. He was 89.
Mr. Barnhurst was born May 16, 1919, in Short Creek, Ariz.
In 1938 he graduated from Eugene High School, and was a drill sergeant in the Pacific Theatre serving for seven years before and after World War II.
In May of 1946 he married Ruth Petersen in Eugene, and they raised 10 children together. She preceded him in death in 1970.
Achieving journeyman carpenter status in September of 1948, he was employed as a union carpenter following the war. He worked on several major dams in the Columbia River. One of his last jobs was at the Trojan Power Plant near Rainier.
In 1971 he married Sadie Shambow in St. Helens. Together they raised his youngest son Roger. She preceded him in death in 1984.
Four years later he married Kathryn Olsen in Longview, Wash. The couple resided in St. Helens until her death in November of 2006. He then moved to Hillsboro to live with his son Roger.
A lifelong member of the Church of Latter-day Saints, he was a high priest.
Among the things he loved were his family, carpentry and building most anything, and fishing.
He is survived by his children and stepchildren: son Dale Barnhurst and his wife Cathleen of Junction City, daughter Lila Higley and her husband Dennis of Puyallup, Wash., daughter Janet Bly and her husband David of Mesquite, Nev., son Dennis Barnhurst and his wife Rhonda of Longview, Wash., son Roger Barnhurst and his wife Kathryn VanNatta of Hillsboro, stepdaughter Dorothy Dean of Newburg, stepson Norman Crawford and his wife Dee of Redmond, stepson David Crawford and his wife Gay of Rochester, Wash., stepson Richard Crawford and his wife Victory of Escalante, Utah, stepdaughter Jean Thompson and her husband Vance of Longview, Wash., and stepdaughter Peggy Hoxey and her husband David of Thermopolis, Wyo.; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 22 step-grandchildren; 50 step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepson Stanley Crawford in 1962.
A service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Church of Latter-day Saints in St. Helens.
Interment with military honors will follow at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
