Born Ricardo Claro Valdes, he was a successful lawyer, businessman and shipping magnate, best known for being the chairman of Chile's Santa Rita wine group. In 1980, he bought the historic Santa Rita Estate, invested heavily in the winery and vineyards making its profile an international brand. Further acquisitions included Vina Carmen (1987), Terra Andina (2001), both in Chile and Dona Paula, Argentina (1997), establishing the Claro Group as a multi-billion dollar wine product on the world market. He also was the Chilean economic adviser for Foreign Affairs, 1973 to 1975 and became the largest investor in Chile after buying the Norasia Shipping Company in 2000. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
