New York
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
Death: Oct. 31, 2008

Author. He received a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1934 and joined the Federal Writers Project, part of the Works Progress Administration. Terkel worked in radio, acting in soap operas, announcing news, and writing ads and scripts. During the McCarthy era he was blacklisted for his political views, among them pacifism and civil rights for African-Americans. In the late 1950s he hosted the Studs Terkel Program, an interview show that aired on weekdays. In 1956 he published "Giants of Jazz", which he followed with a number of books focusing on the history of people in the United States, among them 1970's "Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression", which included recollections of the 1930s spanning the social and economic spectrum from "Okies" to members of America's most wealthy families. Terkel won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for "The Good War", a work that compared the Vietnam War to World War II and challenged the prevailing notion that the 1940s was a time of national solidarity and goodwill. He appeared in the 1988 movie "Eight Men Out" as Hugh Fullerton, the reporter who tries to uncover the White Sox players who fixed the 1919 World Series. In May, 2006 he joined other plaintiffs in an unsuccessful lawsuit against AT&T, attempting to stop the company from voluntarily giving customer phone records to the federal government. Terkel's memoir, "Touch and Go", was published in 2007. (bio by: Bill McKern)
