Riley was the son of James P. Edwards and Nancy Martin.
On 25 Dec 1864 he married Miss Rachel Crouse in Buchanan County, Missouri. They settled in DeKalb County, Missouri until they moved to Okmulgee County, Missouri just after the turn of the century.

He was killed just south of Hoffman, Oklahoma by the Deep Fork River.

Here's his Obit:
A.R. EDWARDS KILLED OCTOBER 26, 1909 It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of our townsman, Mr. A. R. Edwards, on Tuesday the 26th instant. He was out in the bottoms, South of Hoffman, gathering pecans; with him were three of his sons. J. A. Edwards of this place, and John and Marion Edwards, who live in the neighborhood where the accident occurred, together with their families; also Mr. Baxter Bray and wife and Mr. William Breckinridge. The men had cut a pecan tree which fell against a water oak tree of about 18 inches in diameter, stripping the branches from it. The bending and rebounding of the oak broke its roots loose, and when the party started to the lap of the tree to gather the pecans Mr. Edwards was in the lead, when the oak fell, striking him on the head, crushing the body to the earth. It is said that all the bones of the body were broken excepting those of one foot and one arm. Dr. Carlos of Hoffman was called and attended to putting the body in as good shape as possible. Some of the party saw the tree falling, and gave an alarm, but it was too late; when the unfortunate man looked the tree was only about five feet above him, so he had not time to escape. The others narrowly escaped. John Edwards threw himself aside, on the ground, and the tree missed his feet only a few inches, The tree had to be sawn to recover the mutilated body. The deceasesd was born in Missouri on February 8th, 1839, making him over 70 years of age. He had been for twenty five years a member of the Church of God. or Adventists, and ever lived consistently with his profession. He leaves a wife, five sons and seventeen grand-children, his only daughter having gone before. Rev. J. A.Morse, of this place, conducted the funeral service at the home of Marion Edwards at noon on Wednesday. Interment took place at Hoffman.
