Harriet Eliza Mathew was born in 1828, in New York State. She married Cyrus Wakefield Bates in 1846. After their marriage they lived for a time in New York, and moved to Wisconsin in 1855. They were the parents of four children, one dying in infancy. Harriet was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, March 17, 1844. They came to Utah in 1862; the record says he had his own company. Harriet and Cyrus settled in Batesville (Erda), in Tooele County, to be near his brother Ormus E. Bates. They later built a home in Grantsville, where they had a small farm and pasture. They were both active in church and civic affairs. Cyrus was the first Mayor of Grantsville. Harriet was a very hospitable person, filling several church positions. While working on his farm in January, 1895, Cyrus had a heart attack and died. He was buried in the Grantsville Cemetery. Harriet was a widow for nearly eight years. She died in Grantsville at the age of seventy-five years.
