Merle L. Fromson , former president of Halex Co., died Wednesday at Hillcrest Hospital. He was 77.
Mr. Fromson was regarded as an innovator of robotics because of his use of high-performance automated equipment on assembly lines.
He was born in Cleveland and graduated from Cleveland Heights High School. During World War II, he was stationed in Italy and flew bombing runs over Germany as an Army Air Forces B-24 pilot. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering at Fenn College and a master's of business administration at Case Western Reserve University.
Mr. Fromson was a manager of manufacturing for Westinghouse Corp. from 1945 until he joined Halex, a castings maker, in 1968. He retired from the subsidiary of Scott & Fetzer Co. in 1995.
He was a 50-year resident of Beachwood.
Mr. Fromson was a member of the Elysium Skating Club at Thornton Park in Shaker Heights for 45 years. He also was a tennis player and swimmer. He volunteered as a tax consultant for AARP.
He was a lifelong member of Anshe Chesed-Fairmount Temple.
Mr. Fromson is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Karen Sarah Weiss of Beachwood and Terry Fromson of Swarthmore, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Mayfield Cemetery, 2749 Mayfield Rd., Cleveland Heights.
Arrangements are by Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel of Cleveland Heights.
