Van Vleet Matron Killed in Wreck

Mrs. Johnny Atkinson of Van Vleet, member of a prominent Chickasaw County family was killed instantly and her mother, Mrs. Anna Carter, and aunt, Mrs. Edoise Barnett, also of Van Vleet, were injured when their automobile collided with a large truck, nine miles southeast of Pontotoc Monday afternoon.

All three women were thrown out of the car by the force of the impact and the car was knocked a distance of 40 feet. Mrs. Atkinson landed beneath the truck and her head was crushed by one of the wheels, it was reported.

Mrs. Carter, who is 82 years old, and Mrs. Barnett were taken to the Pontotoc Clinic where it was found that Mrs. Carter was in a critical condition and that Mrs. Barnett apparently was suffering only from shock and bruises. Following emergency treatment, Mrs. Carter was taken to the Houston Hospital where her condition remains critical.

Leroy Parrish of New Albany was the driver of the truck-trailer which was enroute to pick up a load of logs, it is understood.

Witnesses said the accident occurred at the intersection of two rural roads, known as Goodfood and Redland, near the home of C O Harris, and that visibility at these crossroads was obscured by brush and trees. There are no stop signs at the crossing.

Funeral services for Mrs. Atkinson were held Wednesday morning from the Van Vleet Methodist Church of which she was a most faithful member. The rites were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. T E Gregory, assisted by the Rev. H M Collins of Van Vleet, and the Rev. D D Satterwhite of Houston. Burial was in the Asbury Cemetery.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband and two brothers, Preston and Herbert Carter of Van Vleet.
