Esten Marlin Fortney, 93, of Convoy, passed away at 12:35 a.m., Sunday, October 6, 2013 at VanCrest of Convoy.

He was born on January 28, 1920, in Dixon, the son of the late Earl and Mabel Margrette (Miller) Fortney. He married the former Mary Alice (Grove) in 1944, and she died in 1972. On September 8, 1973, he married the former Betty L. (Taylor) Baumert who also preceded him in death on August 21, 2012.

Family survivors include his children, Jack (Tracy) Fortney of Van Wert, Jill (David) Bauer of Orlando, FL, and Pam (David) Herminghuysen of Van Wert; three step-children, Jack (Jeanette) Baumert of Fort Wayne, Carl (Linda) Baumert of Antwerp, and Linda (Randy) MaNamara of Payne, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Jill R. Fortney of Van Wert; one brother, Arlo G. Fortney of Dixon, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Mary Fortney of Van Wert and Sue Fortney of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; nine step-grandchildren; 12 step-great grandchildren; and six step-great great grandchildren.

Besides parents and two wives, Esten was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Gene Fortney; two step-grandsons; five brothers, Gene, Donald, Morgan, Harold and Vance Fortney; a sister,. Helen Plumley; brother-in-law, Dale Plumley and two sisters-in-law, Mona Fortney and Ann Fortney. He was a 1938 graduate of Tully-Convoy High School and member of Convoy United Methodist Church. Esten had served as an aviation gunner and radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Panama Canal. He owned and operated Fortney's Barber Shop in Convoy then Van Wert since 1952. He was also a member of the Convoy Lions Club, American Legion Post #208 of Convoy, Flat Rock Masonic Lodge #580 of Payne, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Van Wert.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9,. 2013, at Convoy United Methodist Church with Rev. Gregory Leigh officiating. Burial will follow at Convoy I.O.O.F. Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are Tuesday 3 - 7 p.m., at Cowan & Son Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the Church.
