He is a twin with George Washington Hallowell, also buried in this cemetery.

He served as a baker for the Union Army in the Civil War.
He enlisted in Co. D, 22nd PA Volunteers on 18 Apr 1861 and was discharged on 7 Aug 1861.
He then enlisted in Co. E, 88th PA Infantry on 15 Oct 1861 and was discharged on 11 Jul 1862 with full disability (see below).
His wife then claimed he enlisted in Co. B, 9th Regt of Veterans Reserve Corps on 3 Jun 1863 and was discharged on 12 May 1864.

Alexander sustained a right scrotal hernia in Jan 1862 near Fairfax, Virginia when taking part in a battalion sized drill, he jumped across a ditch and the man behind him lost his balance and pulled Alex back on top of him. This injury was not deemed operable, but it was cause for dischage from the Army, which occurred 11 Jul 1862.
