A coal dealer and later coroner, Ashbridge was elected Mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1898 with over eighty percent of the vote. During his tenure, he proposed the building of the Theodore Roosevelt Boulevard, which is a major artery through north and northeast Philadelphia. He also threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the first professional baseball game played at Columbia Park.
