Grace Hickman Weaver, 96, a resident of West Chester since 1911, died at the Wentworth home on Sunday.
She was the widow of H. Ralph Weaver of Lancaster.
A daughter of the late William Ellsworth and Esther Hannum Hickman, she was born in 1900 on the family farm in Pocopson Township, Chester County, where her parents operated a pork butchering business specializing in scrapple, sausages, and other pork products.
A graduate of Miss Jenny Darlington's School and Pierce Business School in West Chester, Grace Weaver became a well-known fixture in the local community. Her knowledge of early Chester County Cookery was widely acknowledge and appeared in such books as "A Quaker Woman's Cookbook" (1982), "American Eats" (1989), and "The Christmas Cook" (1990) by food historian William Woys Weaver.
A lifelong member of the Society of Friends, Grace Weaver was also active in reopening Marlborough Friends Meeting near Unionville in the 1930's and taught first-day school there for many years. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Birmingham Friends Meeting.
She is survived by two sons, H. William Weaver of Tucson, Ariz., and Donald E. Weaver of West Chester; a daughter, Catherine Wit of Arlington, Ill.; a sister Myrtle Nelson of Sebastian, Fla.' nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Pennel Hickman and a sister, Ethel Hadfield.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 3, at 2:30 p.m. in the Founds Funeral Home, High and Union Sts., West Chester.
Interment is private in the Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery.
