Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, he enlisted on September 2, 1862 and was subsequently mustered into Company A of the 25th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry as 1st Sergeant when the newly formed 9-month regiment entered United States service on November 11, 1862. From January 29, 1863, he, now at the rank of Lieutenant, was charged with the responsibilities of Adjutant of the 25th Connecticut and would remain in this staff position until his and the regiment’s mustering out date of August 26, 1863. Returning to the cause of the Union on January 16, 1864, he was commissioned a Captain in Company E of the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry and would ascend through the ranks until his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel on July 21, 1864. On November 6, 1864, he was discharged for promotion and was transferred to the 31st United States Color Troops to become its Colonel and commanding officer. On November 29, 1865, the eve of his mustering out date, he obtained the honorary rank of Brevet Brigadier General, United States Volunteers, for his “gallant and meritorious services during the war”.
