Charles B Smith served first in the 27th Maine Infantry, 30 Sept 1862 to 17 July 1863. He reenlisted into the 1st DC Cavalry on 11 Feb, 1864, came down ill during Wilsons Raid, and died on 27 July 1864 at Point of Rocks Hospital. Originally buried at cemetery there, reinterred at City Point. Cenotaph in Biddeford, ME says he died 30 July, while ACWS has 15 July.
