JOHN BABBS WAS BORN VIRGINIA 8/11/1756, DIED 2/13 1844 AT THE HOME OF DAUGHER HANNAH GLASS IN RIPLEY CO INDIANA. HE IS BURIED IN BOOHER GRAVEYARD NAPELEON, IND. HE ENLISTED IN THE SUMMER OF 1776 AT ANNAPOLIS, MD FOR A 3 YR PERIOD AND WAS A PRIVATE IN COL. SMALLWOODS REGT, MARYLAND LINE. HE RE-ENLISTED FOR THE WARS DURATION. HE WAS IN THE BATTLE ON LONG ISLAND, UNDER CAPT. ANDREW SCOTT AND WITH THE REMNANTS OF THE REGIMENT STILL SURVIVING, FOUGHT IN THE BATTLE OF WHITE PLAINS, N. Y, WHERE SCOTT WAS KILLED. JOHN SUFFERED A BROKEN LEG BEING STRUCK BY A CHUNK OF ROCK TORN LOOSE BY A CANNONBALL. HE WAS HOSPITALIZED AT MORRISTOWN, N. J. BUT WHEN THE LEG HEALED WAS JUDGED UNFIT FOR ACTIVE SERVICE. THEREAFTER HE SERVED AS ORDERLY SERGEANT AND HOSPITAL ATTENDANT, APPEARING AT BETHLEHEM, VALLEY FORE, AND GOSS KEYS IN PA. AT FISHKILL, N. Y. AND AT MIDDLEBROOK, N. J. AT THE CLOSE OF THE WAR HE MARCHED TO ANNAPOLIS,MD. HIS DISCHARGE WAS SIGNED BY LT. BURGES AND MAJOR PRICE OF MD.
