As per contributor Richard Joseph Francis Finnick:
“Alva enlisted in Co. E, 8th Wisconsin Infantry and was mustered out 3 years later after constant service. 3 months later he reenlisted in Co. K, 42nd Wisconsin Infantry and mustered out 22 June 1865 at Madison, WI. He served under General A. J. Smith and participated in 32 battles and skirmishes, including Corinth, Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing and Island No. 10. He was a trustee of the Presbyterian Church in Plover.”
