George was the son of John and Harriett Burkett Steckman. He married 1st to Dorcas Bagley who died in August of 1859 in Rock Island County, Illinois. George returned to Belmont County, Ohio with his 2 young children, Mary and John Steckman. George's 2nd marriage was to a younger sister of his 1st wife. George and Mary Jane Bagley were married on September 10, 1861. George served 1st for 3 months and then 3 years with the 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry. To George and Mary were born the following children: Fannie Jane, George Milton, David A., Elizabeth Ann, Nannie Belle, Samuel William, James Albert, Mary Edith, Pearl Abigail and Louella Ruth. Mary died on April 29, 1905. George made his home with his youngest daughter, Louella Ruth Steckman Robinson until his death.
