HEZEKIAH FARIS was born in Virginia in 1797-1798. After being raised in Tennessee, he migrated to Texas to fight for its freedom in 1835. The land commissioners for Montgomery County issued Hezekiah a league and labor of land on February 2, 1838. Mr. Faris was married to Mrs. Matilda (Stephens) Roberts, widow of Thomas Roberts.

Mr. Faris served in the Texas Army from March 1 to May 30, 1836. He was a member of Captain James Gillaspie's Company at the Battle of San Jacinto and on July 13, 1838 was issued Donation Certificate No. 464 for participating in the battle.

Hezekiah became a local leader of a community in Walker County, and named Faris Chapel for his home church in Tennessee. Mr. Faris died December 21, 1859, and his wife, Matilda who was born in 1788, died December 5, 1865. Husband and wife are buried in marked graves in the Faris Cemetery near Huntsville, Walker County. In time the family changed their family name to Farris, and the Cemetery name now reflects this change.

Children of Mr. and Mrs. Faris were Susan and J. M. Faris. Susan was born in Franklin County, Tennessee, August 18, 1829 and on August 12, 1849 was married to Captain James Gillaspie, who was her father's commanding officer at San Jacinto. J. M. Faris was born in Franklin County, Tennessee, October 28, 1832. On February 28, 1860 he was married to Susan Brown of Grimes County.

Texas State Historical Monument #8447 was located in the center of the Farris Cemetery in honor of Hezekiah Farris's service to the State.
