Warren D. Whitaker, 63, of Blair, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 at First Lutheran Church in Blair. Graveside services and interment will be at the Blair Cemetery

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 14, and with the family from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Warren D. Whitaker was born June 27, 1937, in Omaha. He was raised in Valley, graduated from Valley High School in 1954, and attended the University of Nebraska in Omaha.

In 1966, he earned his Nebraska state certification as a professional land surveyor. In 1977, he became licensed to practice in Nebraska as a city street superintendent, and as a county highway superintendent.

He spent time working for the State Road Engineering Department, and later for Stewart A. Smith and Associates, a privately owned surveying company. He went on to purchase this company in the early 80s and changed the name to Whitaker Engineering & Survey Company (WESCO). In 1984, Whitaker became the Director of Public Works for the City of Blair, where he worked until the time of his illness.

His memberships included the Nebraska National Guard, Blair Kiwanis Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Professional Land Surveyors, the Blair Golf Club, and the First Lutheran Church in Blair.

Whitaker is survived by his wife, Ellen Petersen Whitaker, whom he married on June 30, 1962; a daughter, Kirsten, of Blair; his mother, Gladys Jackson Whitaker, currently of Blair; as well as "special" daughter and son, Gavriela and Loreta Encalada of Ecuador, and Daniela and Vic Vidal of Brazil.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ward Whitaker, and also his younger brother, Wayne "Skip" Whitaker.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, the Diabetes Association, or First Lutheran Church.
