William Matterson Johnson was born August 20, 1843 at Santa Fe, Murray County, Tenn.; died December 9, 1929 at his home in Minco, Okla.; age 86 years, 3 months and 11 days.

At the age of 18 years he volunteered his services in the Confederate Army at the beginning of the Civil War under Captain Forrest. He was held captive by the Union forces at Camp Morton, Indiana the last 18 months of the war.

He was united in marriage to Miss Desmonia True, July 19, 1868. In the year 1878 they moved to Obion County, West Tenn. From there they moved to Earth County, Texas in 1892 and moved to Minco, Oklahoma, Dec. of the year 1907, where he lived until his death. He was the first death in his family.

He is survived by his aged wife, 12 children, 7 daughters, Mrs. R.C. Scroggin of Minco, Mrs. R.J. Hogan of Moore Okla., Mrs. J. V. Stephen of Dublin, Texas, Mrs. Charles Winston of Oklahoma City, Mrs. C.E. McMahan of Minco, Mrs. H.H. Knox of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Mrs. N.A. Reno of Minco; five sons, C.M. Johnson of Minco, D.C. Johnson of Oklahoma City, H.D. Johnson of Minco, E.L. Johnson of Tulsa, and Earl Johnson of Minco. He is also survived by 39 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
