FORT WORTH - James K. Alewine, a retired civil engineer, died Sunday at a Fort Worth hospital. He was 86.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Ridglea Presbyterian Church, where he was a charter member deacon and trustee. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Greenwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alewine was born on a farm south of Mexia and had lived in Fort Worth for 61 years.

He received his civil engineering degree from Southern Methodist University in 1930 and was a professional engineer for 45 years. He was the resident engineer for the Texas & Pacific Railway Station.

Mr. Alewine had worked for the engineering firms of Freese & Nichols and Carter & Burgess and had varied experience in the design and construction of dams and water and sewer utilities throughout Texas.

During World War II, Mr. Alewine worked on numerous Army installations, including Camp Bowie in Brownwood and the Pantex Ordinance Plant in Amarillo.He was engineer manager in the development of the Ridgmar housing addition and several other subdivisions in that area. He was instrumental in the design and construction of Camp Timberlake for the Girl Scouts of America.

Mr. Alewine was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and served as vice president in 1948. He was president of the North Central Texas Section of the Texas Water and Sewage Works Association in 1949 and was active in the Fort Worth Boat Club, the downtown Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors: Wife, Bettie Alewine of Fort Worth; two sons, Michael Alewine of Austin and Kevin Alewine of Dallas; daughter, Janis Turner of Arlington; brother, R.Q. Alewine of Huntsville; sister, Inez Simmons of Houston; and six grandchildren.
