Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: Apr. 6, 1849
Oxfordshire, England
Death: Aug. 18, 1899
Prince William County
Virginia, USA

Ann "Annie" Allen was born in Blackthorn, Oxfordshire, England to Benjamin and Mary (Knapton) Allen. She was christened in Ambrosden, Oxfordshire, England on 6 May 1849.

She had two younger sisters, Sarah and Mary. Her brother, John, passed away at the age of 2 on his way to America.

Her maternal grandparents were John and Sarah (Foster) Allen. Her paternal grandparents were William and Rebecca (Stanford) Knapton.

Not long after arriving in Prince William, Virginia, her mother passed away. Annie was only 9 years old at the time.

Her father remarried on 1 November 1860 to another recent widow, Harriett Penn, who had two children, John William Austin and Margaret Austin. Benjamin and Harriett added three more children to the growing family - Charlotte, Henry and Edward.

1865 turned out to be a terrible year for the family. In March, 3-month-old Edward passed away, then one month later, Annie's stepmother Harriett passed away. Six months later, in October, her sister Mary died at the age of 8.

On 4 December 1873 in the District of Columbia, she married Newton Sayers. Newton and Annie had nine children:

Mrs. Mary Ann Hayth
Mrs. Charlotte Allen Kerlin
Mrs. Nettie Virginia Hedrick
Mrs. Minnie N. Baggot/Houghton
Mr. Benjamin Joseph Sayers
Mr. Robert Lee Sayers
Mrs. Blanche Bennett Beach
Ms. Grace Sears (died at 19 months)
Mrs. Rebecca Hazel Herbert

Together, Newton and Annie owned Massadale Farm, in Nokesville, Virginia, upon which the Asbury Church and Cemetery was built. They are both buried here, along with many of their children, grandchildren and extended family.
