Actress, Singer. She was a familiar presence of television, motion pictures and the theater in a career that spanned from the 1950s until her passing. She was married to comedian Ernie Kovacs, and co-starred in his television programs which included "The Ernie Kovacs Show" and "Take a Good Look". Born Elizabeth Edith Enke in Kingston, Pennsylvania, she studied at the Juilliard School of Music, where she trained as a classical vocalist. She first gained recognition as winner of the "Miss U.S. Television Beauty Pageant" in 1950. She made her Broadway stage debut in the musical "Wonderful Town" (1953 to 1954) and won a Tony Award for her performance in the production "Li'l Abner" (1956 to 1958). Among her motion picture credits were "The Apartment" (1960), "Lover Come Back" (1961), "Under the Yum Yum Tree" (1963), "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963), "Love with the Proper Stranger" (1963), "The Oscar" (1966) and "Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke" (1978). Her television appearances include "The Ed Sullivan Show", "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show", "The Love Boat" and "Murder, She Wrote". In addition, she starred in her own musical variety program "The Edie Adams Show" from 1963 to 1964, and appeared in the long-running commercial series for Muriel Cigars. After Ernie Kovacs' death from an automobile accident in 1962, Adams married music publisher and photographer Marty Mills and later to jazz musician Pete Candoli. She died in her Los Angeles, California home from complications of pneumonia and cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
