James S. Bushong was born April 15, 1818, in Ross County, Ohio. In 1834, at the age of sixteen he came, with his parents, George and Lydia (Rush) Bushong to the township of Riley, in Putnam County, Ohio. James married September 13, 1839, Drusilla D. Stout. Drusilla was born April 28, 1822, in Champaign County, Ohio. Her parents were John and Mary (Hill) Stout. Mr. Stout is known for having made several early surveys of Putnam County, and helped layout the local towns and townships.

James and Drusilla led a relatively quiet life, they were farmers, and property owners, owning several properties in the surrounding area and townships, of Riley, Pleasant, Union, Pandora, and Columbus Grove, Ohio. James served in several public offices and was for a time a trustee on the school board. In the 1850 census Drusilla stated she could not read or write. One of their sons, Joseph, fought in the Civil War.

Drusilla died July 10, 1893 and James died August 31, 1895. They are both buried in the Pandora Cemetery
