The following information was sent to me courtesy of Find-A-Grave contributor Polsley:

"Reference: The Story of Decatur 1823-1899 (1973) by Caroline McKinney Clark - Page 257-259: Daniel Stone Genelogy Pedigree:

Born in: Farquiar County, Virginia
Died in: Dekalb County, Georgia

The date of death is listed as June 28, 1849, which is different than what is noted on the memorial.

Married: Nancy Gatewood (May 1, 1773, Farquiar County, Virginia - Aug 31, 1838, Dekalb County, Georgia)

Mason D. Shumate was the proprietor of the first hotel in Decatur. He was also a founder of Decatur First Presbyterian Church and gave the land which the first church was built on. Several years later he moved from Decatur to a plantation he owned. The plantation was located about one mile east of Decatur. He lived there and engaged in planting with his slaves until the time of his death. He also owned land around Edgewood which was used as a hog range. The administrators for his estate sold 100 acres of that land for $700.00 during the 1850's."
