DEATH’S HAND UPON WIFE OF CITY’S MAYOR
Mrs. Eleanor Holcomb Loses 10 Months’ Battle as End Comes in L.S.
RECONCILED TO OUTCOME
Husband and Mother Are at Bedside; Four Children Also Left To Mourn
Mrs. Eleanor Holcomb, wife of Mayor Grant Holcomb, died shortly before 10 o’clock last night at the California Lutheran hospital at Los Angeles.
It was the end of a 10 months’ battle in which medical and surgical science failed to check a disease that had first manifested itself just at Christmas time last year. In January Mrs. Holcomb submitted to an operation, and then began the long fight of science in an effort to save her life.
That the wife of the city’s mayor had been repeatedly at death’s door had never been publicly announced, although hundreds of her friends knew of the extreme critical condition.
Was Told End Not Far Away
Mayor Holcomb and Mrs. M. L. Burkham, Mrs. Holcomb’s mother, were with her when she passed away.
Waiting at their home here for news from the bedside were other relatives including four young children, Grant Jr., Katherine Lee, William Robert and Theodore.
Mrs. Holcomb was fully conscious that there could be no other outcome. The last resort of medical science had failed, and she had been told of the verdict of the physicians. At 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon she conferred with her close friend, Mrs. George W. Hellyer, and confided in her certain requests. Her farewell was with a smile. During the late afternoon and early evening Mrs. Holcomb began to sink.
Entered Many Civic Affairs
Mrs. Holcomb was 38 years of age. She was a native of Nevada. She was one of the best known young matrons of San Bernardino, and took an active part in the civic affairs of the city. As the wife of the mayor she had entered with enthusiasm the duty of aiding him in his work as the city’s chief executive.
Funeral arrangements have not been made, and are in charge of the Mark B. Shaw company.
