Hale W. Hanchett, 88, retired from Potlatch
Hale W. Hanchett, 88, a retired foreman for Potlatch Corp., died Monday of cancer at his son's Lewiston home.
He was born Oct. 6, 1909, to Worden E. and Kateryne Olson Hanchett at Sidney, Mont. His father was a boilermaker in the machine shop of the former Great Northern Railway in the days of steam locomotives. The family moved frequently along the Great Northern routes. He attended school in Wisconsin and high school at Kalispell, Mont.
In 1926 he moved to Asotin. He worked in the woods at Big Island on the North Fork of the Clearwater River when he was 19. In February 1929 he was employed by the Clearwater Timber Co., which later became Potlatch Forests Inc., now Potlatch Corp. In 1946 he moved to the town of Potlatch, where he operated the company's fruit and vegetable box factory for four years. He returned to Lewiston in 1951 as foreman of the glue department and later foreman of the box factory. He retired in 1975.
He married Earldean A. Tannahill Sept. 25, 1946, at Kalispell, Mont. They made their home at Potlatch before moving to Lewiston. She died Jan. 1, 1996. A previous marriage to Freida Hulse ended in divorce.
He belonged to the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints at Clarkston. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 96, where he was previously a tyler.
He enjoyed music, playing the trombone, drums and piano. He enjoyed rock hunting, bowling and metal detecting. For the past two years he has lived with and been cared for by his son, Gordon H. Hanchett, and his wife Tania.
Survivors include two sons, Gary L. Hanchett and Gordon Hanchett, both of Lewiston; three daughters, Kathy R. Burcham and Gayle Z. Jensen, both of Lewiston, and Helen J. Hanchett of Buhl, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, Harold and Ross Hanchett; and two sisters, Betty Bailey and Bernie Jones.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lewiston with Marion Renfro of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Clarkston officiating. Burial will be at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston.
