Charles Augustus is the son of Samuel Crawford and Maranda Emory. He was adopted by his cousin Robert Crawford and his wife Emeline Greenleaf. He married Susan Rorabough in 1858. They were the parents of Lewis, Carrie, Ida, Nason, Effie, Nellie, Minnie, William, Harry, George, Ruth, and Eva Crawford.

Charles served in the Civil War and was wounded at Gettysburg.

June 20, 1861 - Enrolled as Pvt in Cpt Dawes Co, 6th Regt Wis Infantry at Mauston, Juneau Co, WI, for a period of 3 yrs. Age 23.
