Anne Arundel County
|Death: ||Jan. 1, 1855|
Ruth Faith Chaney, the daughter of Joseph B. and Elizabeth Benson Chaney, was born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland in 1768.
On December 22, 1792, Ruth married Edmond Hardesty, a widower with two children, Harriet and Thomas Hardesty. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend C. Ridgely. Together, they raised seven more children: Nancy, John, Elizabeth, Sophia, Rachel, Daniel and Amy Hardesty.
According to an Article by Gladys G. Dietz, entitled Hardesty Migration, the Edmond Hardesty family migrated from Anne Arundel county, Maryland to Coshocton County, Ohio in 1811. Their daughter, Rachel, was born on February 14, 1811 while her parents were camping for the night at White Woman's Rock in Bethlehem Township.
They enjoyed many years on the farm together until Ruth's death in 1855. She was laid to rest at Chalfant Cemetery, which bordered the Hardesty land.
In about 1862, Edmund relocated to be with family in Illinois, and made his home with his daughter Nancy (Mrs. William) Tilton until he died February 6, 1864. He is buried in Washington Grove Cemetery, Ogle County,
Illinois, along with many of his children and grandchildren.
Note: There has been some speculation that Ruth was re-interred at Washington Grove; however, there is no supporting documentation in the cemetery files of either Chalfant or Washington Grove. Ruth's name does not appear on Edmond Hardesty's stone at Washington Grove Cemetery.
