Esther Whiteside Bratton, 86, of 805 Park Street, Clifton Forge, Va., died, Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.
She was born on April 19, 1919 in Clifton Forge, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Ethel Baker Whiteside.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was secretary for the Retail Merchants Association, credit department of the local Sears store, and worked in several Clifton Forge Banks.
She was a lifelong member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church and had been active in a number of areas, including the Flower and Altar Committee. She was a long time member of the Twilight Garden Club, a life member of Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She was an avid gardener, bridge player, enjoyed needlework and baking.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Counts and husband Jeffrey of Lynch Station; two sons and a daughter-in-law, DeWitt Talmadge Bratton, Jr. and wife Teresa of Roanoke, and Grover C. Bratton of Covington; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward C. Whiteside and wife, Jean of Covington; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Rice and husband Norman of Clifton Forge; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, DeWitt Talmadge Bratton, Sr. in 2002; one daughter, one sister, and four brothers.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend David Kirk officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Chad Bratton, Nathan Little, Zachary Little, Andrew Little, Mitchell Bratton, Paul Rice, Keven Rice, and Steve Sams. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Dew, Byron Way, Roy Putnam, Fred Feazell, Larry Cross, and Terry Nicely.
