Luke was the 3rd of 9 children (2nd son) born of Reuben Noble (1732-1812) and his wife Ann Ferguson (d. abt. 1809). Luke's siblings were: David (1756-1822), Editha (1758-1830), Mary (1763-1847), Cummin (1765-1837), Anna (1767-1851), Jemima (1770-1843), Reuben (b. 1772), and Ruth.

By the breakout of the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Luke had moved with his parents to Rupert on the New Hampshire Grants (now Bennington County, Vermont).

In July 1776, Luke, at the age of 15 years, volunteered at Rupert and served in Captain Tehan Noble's Company, Colonel Gideon Warren's 5th Vermont Militia Regiment. He marched with Captain Noble's Company to Mount Independence on Lake Champlain where they stayed about 2 months until discharged. In September 1776, Seth served at Mount Independence under Lieutenant Enoch Eastman until about the middle of October when they were sent home.

In June 1777, Luke enlisted at Rupert in Captain Tehan Noble's Militia Company. Captain Noble's Company went to Fort Ticonderoga where they served until July 6, 1777 when the Fort was given up. Thence they marched to Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont where they were engaged, July 7, 1777, in the Battle of Hubbardton. Thence they went on to Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont where they stayed until an alarm came to go to Bennington in the same county. They were engaged in the Battle of Bennington, July 16, 1777. Luke was discharged soon after that battle and went home.

In the spring of 1778, Luke enlisted in Captain Tehan Noble's Rupert Company of Vermont Militia and served for about three months at Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont. In the summer 1778, Luke, served, for three months as a substitute for Seth Hammond, under the command of Sergeant Stephen Eastman of Rupert at Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. At Castleton, they were engaged in building a "Fort Guard House" (Fort Warren). On November 7, 1778, Luke again entered Captain Tehan Noble's Company, Colonel Gideon Warrens' 5th Regiment of Vermont Militia and served by the order of the Vermont Governor and Council defending the Frontiers of the State. Luke was discharged from this service, November 13, 1778.

On April 23, 1779, Luke again entered Captain Tehan Noble's Company, Colonel Gideon Warren's 5th Regiment of Vermont Militia and served about 60 days in the defence of the Northern Frontier. Captain Noble's Company spent this period of serivce at Fort Ticonderoga. Luke was discharge from this service, June 18, 1779.

Luke served six days in Captain Tehan Noble's (Rupert) Company, Colonel Ira Allen's 6th Regiment of Vermont Miltia responding to the alarm of March 26, 1780. Later in the same year, in October, Luke served thirteen days in Captain Tehan Noble's (Rupert) Company, Colonel Ira Allen's 6th Regiment of Vermont Militia during the alarm caused by the raid led by British Major Christopher Carleton into the Lake Champlain Valley and beyond.

In May 1782, Luke served two days in Captain Enoch Eastman's Rupert Company, Colonel Ira Allen's Regiment of Vermont Militia, called out by express orders of May 1, 1782, to pursue after the enemy (Tories) which had taken Lieutenant William Blanchard and Captain Hind's son, both of Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont.

Luke married, 1781, Mary McCleary (1746-1827) by whom he had 4 children: Mary (1782-1848), Martha (1784-1810), Luke (1786-1865), and Jane (1788-1852).

For a time, in the early 1800s, Luke kept a Tavern at Centre Falls in Greenwich, Washington County, New York. From thence he returned to Rupert.
