Sirrissia E. Basham, 93, of Okay died Monday, December 13, 1993, in Bartlesville. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 1993, in the Hersman Chapel in Wagoner with the Rev. Carlos V. Knight, of Fort Gibson First Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in Three Rivers Cemetery near Okay under the direction of Hersman-Nichols Funeral Home of Wagoner.
Mrs. Basham was born in the Cherokee Nation Indian Territory, now Wagoner County, on November 21, 1900, to Samuel and Elmira Candy Smith. She attended rural elementary, Fort Gibson High School and Northeastern State College. She completed a business course at Draughon's Business School in 1919. She was an original enrollee of the Cherokee Nation.
She and Jesse F. Basham were married June 27, 1920, in Winfield, Kansas. They made their home in Wagoner and later rural Wagoner County near Okay. For a short time, she taught in a rural elementary school. From 1921 through 1933, she was employed in the offices of The Wagoner County Clerk, County Treasurer and County Assessor. From 1933 to 1937, she worked in various federal programs in Wagoner County. In December 1937, she was employed by the State Department of Human Services as a social worker and retired in October 1970. She was a member of the Fort Gibson First Baptist Church and Oklahoma Retired Employees Association.
She is survived by a sister, Texanna S. Strebel of Tahlequah; a daughter, Joan Kelly of Bartlesville; a son, James R. Basham of Okay; a granddaughter, Jay Lynn Hester of Tulsa; grandsons, David Basham of Tulsa and James Robert Kelly of Fort Worth; step-great-granddaughters, Tracy and Ginger Smith; and great-grandson, Kyle Jackson Kelly.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a brother, Bruce Smith; a sister, Elizabeth Strebel; and an infant son.
