Delbert Wayne Canton, of Joplin, died at St. John's Hospital at 11:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

He was born Dec. 31, 1922, in Humansville, Mo, to the late Willie Canton and Viola Hopper Canton. He was a Veteran of World War II. He married Elizabeth "Betty" L. Roderique on Sept. 5, 1944, at Fort Jackson, SC. She survives.

In addition to his wife, Betty, Delbert is survived by his sons, Mike and Jim; and grandchildren Brian Canton, Erin Turner, Stewart Canton, and Davis Canton; great-grandchildren are Madison Canton, Brennan Canton, and Lauren Turner.

Delbert and Betty were active in many organizations, and were founders of the local St. Vincent de Paul Society, an organization that assists people in distress. He was zealous in his work on behalf of the society, answering the call of need at any time of the day or night.

Delbert has been taken for cremation. There will be a rosary service and family visitation on Monday at 10:30 am at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Webb City. Funeral Mass will follow at 11 am, Father John Braun the celebrant. Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in care of the mortuary to benefit the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund or their local youth athletic association.
