| Birth: | Jan. 29, 1816 Jackson County West Virginia, USA | | Death: | May 13, 1890 Reger Sullivan County Missouri, USA |  Dr. Joel DeWitt was the son of Thomas DeWitt and Magdalene Buffington who lived in Jackson County, WV and are buried in Dewitt Cemetery, in Jackson Co, WV.
Joel's wife was Rachel Ann Mairs, daughter of Dr. Joseph Mairs and Margaret Bell who also lived in WV.
Joel was born at Muses Bottom region along the Ohio River of Mason County, Virginia, which later became Jackson County, WV.
He served in the Civil War as a Major and Surgeon in the Union Army's Missouri Militia's 66th Regiment, Companies F & S. (Field and Staff) His total service was 286 days spread between 1863-1865. Therefore, his grave deserves a Civil War marker.
