Civil Engineer. George Curtis Tingley obtained his early education at the South Windham Academy, and in 1848 he entered Trinity College, Hartford, graduating with the class of 1852. With the exception of a few years immediately after completing his education, his entire life was devoted to his profession of engineering; elected a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers on September 6th, 1871. He was Assistant Engineer on the construction of the Hartford, Providence and Fishkill Railroad. About 1860 he joined firm Cushing and DeWitt, the office of Samuel Barrett Cushing Sr [1811-1873], (who was at that time the leading engineer of Rhode Island) where he remained for a period of 33 years. Upon the retirement of Mr. DeWitt, Mr. Tingley became a partner of Cushing and Co., which consisted of S. B. Cushing Sr., Samuel Barrett Cushing Jr. [1846-1888], George C. Tingley, and Col. J. Albert Monroe [1836-1891]. This firm was dissolved by the retirement of Col. Monroe and the subsequent death of the elder Mr. Cushing in 1873, after which it became S. B. Cushing & Co. After the death of S. B. Cushing, Jr., Mr. Tingley conducted the business alone until his retirement from private practice in 1892. In 1892, Mr. Tingley was chosen Chief Engineer of the Union Railroad of Providence, and retained that position until his retirement from actual business in 1901.
