Duke , he is considered the "behind the scenes" link in the development of Duke University. He served as Vice-President to the family's large tobacco empire before establishing a textile factory in 1892. In 1905 he helped begin what became known as the Duke Power Company. Under his leadership the company became the leading source of electricity in the Carolina region supplying power to over three hundred industrial plants. Although not as famous as his brother, Benjamin was just as generous. In addition to being a major benefactor of Duke University it is estimated that he gave millions of dollars to twenty-seven different universities during the last three years of his life.
