Borden was the son of Deborah Borden and David Brayton. He married Mary Remington on September 12, 1784 in Tiverton, Rhode Island. They had 11 children: Deborah, Thomas, Inocent, Abigail, David, Hannah, Francis, Sarah, Patience, Borden (Jr.) and Mary.

Borden was a water boy in the War of 1776. He was the first pensioned soldier in the State of RI and was a tax assessor for many years. He lent money on mortgages as well. In 1811 he rode to Newport on horseback and had the entailment take off his property in RI. That same year he rode to Plymouth to do the same for his property in MA. He was a large landholder and left a will which was probated December 10, 1849. He lived with his youngest son, Borden, Jr. and his daughter Hannah.
