His great-grandfather was Elisha Hand, who held a commission as an officer in the colonial army during the war of the Revolution and his grandfather, Aaron Hand, was enrolled in the Cape May Independent Regiment in the War of 1812. His father, Noah Hand, was born in Cape May County and in early life went to sea as first mate on a sailing vessel, trading with southern ports. He resided in Camden, New Jersey, for many years and in 1873, came to Cape May County, bringing his family with him. His wife bore the maiden name of Jane A. Hannah, who died December 31, 1895 at the age of 77 years.
Aaron Willman Hand became a teacher and taught at various New Jersey schools including Dennisville, Rio Grande, Cape May Point and served as principal of schools of Cape May City. He also was associate editor of the Cape May Daily Star and manager of the Star of the Cape Publishing Company. During his time he was considered among the leading business men of Cape May.
In 1877, Mr. Hand married Miss Letitia Byers Reeves, a member of one of the most prominent pioneer families of Cape May County.
His children include: Albert Reeves Hand (who married Sara Elizabeth Millet, daughter of Mayor Thomas W. Millet of Cape May), Bernard R. Hand, Rena Hand, Ellwood S. Hand, and twin daughters, Jeanette R. & Anita R. Hand.
