Nicholas and Françoise/Frances (née Petitjean) Ducray, who in 1839 emigrated with their nine children from the Ducray family village of Gondenans-les-Moulins, France, and settled near Meadville in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where they had one more child (see "HARDY PIONEER FAMILY"). Nicholas wanted his family to grow up in a peaceful land, free from the ravages of war.
Julius was the tenth child of Nicholas and Frances, and the first Ducray born in the United States of their family line.
Nicholas encouraged his sons to move West. Only Julius and his elder brother Augustus (born Gustavus) Ducray remained in Pennsylvania, caring for Nicholas and Frances in their elder years, and carrying on farming in Crawford County.
Julius married Julia Grosclaude, who also was born in the village of Gondenans-les-Moulins, France.
