Captain Ferguson, from Austin, Texas, was
one of sixteen airmen who perished when
U.S Air Force KC-97G Stratofreighter

north of Flagstaff, Arizona, during a flight
originating from Walker Air Force Base in
New Mexico.

The aerial refueling tanker was on a mapping
and surveying flight over the Arizona desert
and the southwest to observe and note route
hazards for low-level, high-speed B-47
Stratojet training flights.

The aircraft was last observed heading
northwest from Winslow and entering heavy
cloud cover. Shorty after, it made a wrong
turn into the mountainside.

The crewmembers killed aboard were:

James E Hicks
Ronald E Ruble
David A Whitmore
John G Schardong
